Mineral Foundations: Bare Minerals vs. FYF (Freebie Alert!)

I do love a good magazine freebie, and when I was flicking through the latest issue of Elle (UK) I came across a little gem I thought I should share with you all! This month they have collaborated to give away a sample pot of Bare Minerals Matte foundation, complete with a 'mini buki' brush!

I'm afraid I can't recall the exact page number the voucher was on, but it was a full page so I'm sure you won't miss it! I popped along to the Bare Minerals counter in Selfridges to collect my miniature set and was given the shade 'Medium Beige'. I have to say the little brush is just the cutest thing ever! I'm so in love with it (and it's perfect for travelling too!)

I'm actually pretty new to the world of mineral foundations. I have recently been trying Flawless You Forever's Impeccable loose mineral powder in 'Nude' so I was interested to compare it to Bare Minerals (seeing as they're the most 'well known' brand on the market).

I was initially skeptical about going for a powder foundation in general, thinking that the coverage would leave something to be desired. I was wrong though... combined with a good concealer under the eyes and on any break outs or red areas, it leaves the skin looking gorgeous: buildable coverage without looking 'cakey', or even like you're wearing foundation at all!

I have really been enjoying the application of both products (which are almost identical in consistency and coverage). For those of you who are also new to minerals, Bare Minerals' mantra of 'Swirl, Tap, Buff' is applicable to all brands of the stuff and works great with my Sigma SS150 brush! I have to say that when compared, I think I prefer the Flawless You Forever (or 'FYF') version. It may be the shade, but it seems to be slightly more 'glowing', and accentuates the natural tones in my skin beautifully, while keeping my skin matte and fresh looking.

You only need a teeny tiny amount of powder, and the sifting plate within the packaging dispenses just the right amount if you give it a little tap. The FYF product also offers a higher sun protection factor (SPF18) than the Bare Minerals (SPF15) which is always a bonus in my book!

The foundations are similarly priced, but you get 50% more product for your money from FYF (Bare Minerals is £19 for 8g and FYF $28 (around £18.50) for 14g) which is another bonus. What's more, FYF are offering you all 15% off their foundation until 12th September, just enter the code 'XT15C1' at the checkout! (They also offer free international shipping, yey!)

If you'd like to see a review of FYF cosmetics, including the Impeccable powder - check out my latest YouTube Video!

What's the verdict girls? Are you a fan of mineral foundations? If not, fancy trying them out?

  6. I love mineral foundation - I started using Bare Escentuals about 10 years ago, and have tried different brands of mineral foundation, as well as switched back and forth between the "new" liquid foundations on the market and still go back to BE. I have not tried the matte, though, so once I run out, I think I will get a pot of that to test out. Thanks for your review!

  7. I just recently got Bare minerals, it's definiately better when you layer it up. One layer isn't enough for me personally :( FYF looks an interesting brand though :)

  9. I'm a HUGE fan of bare minerals! It's the only foundation that's good for my skin because i have an extremely sensitive skin and i have tried a lot of products but bare minerals is absolutely the best! The medium shade isn't working for me, i have a lighter skin so i have to go with the fairly light or light!

I highly recommend a starters kit from bare minerals. It contains 3 brushes, a concealer (it really gives you high coverage - i was suprised about that!), 2 powders (which you can combine to give you the exact right colour for your skin type), a blush and a veil! There is also a brochure and a disc where you can find useful tips for applying the powders.

Some people may be scared of by using so many powders on top of each other but the result is absolutely amazing! You have high coverage and it doesn't look like you have a lot of make up on at all!! The brushes are great quality too!
