I have heard rumours here and there about silk sheets and their benefits for your skin and hair, but was surprised to hear that there is a brand solely dedicated to natural silk pillowcases. 'SilkSkin' pillowcases boast a list of beauty & health benefits including:
- Helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles appearing through maintaining moisture levels in your skin.
- The same moisture-maintaining properties also claim help to relieve eczema and dry, irritable skin and scalps
- Reducing 'bed head' by avoiding the friction that is common between cotton sheets and hair strands
- Dettering dust mites, therefore leaving you with 'cleaner' bedding (they don't live in silk apparently!)
As a fairly skeptical person in general... I have to say I was not convinced that these pillowcases really would make a difference when I was offered to try one out, but none the less I was intrigued and agreed to play guinea pig.
And I'm very glad I did.
One week later my hair is significantly less knotty and ruffled when I wake up in the morning - Not totally frizz-free but I'd say it's a 60% improvement! As for the anti-ageing benefits, I don't think that is something you can monitor so well, but the pillowcases do feel amazing against the skin, they are ridiculously soft and feel super luxurious.
The one downside is the price. These don't come cheap at £36 each and to be honest, I'm not really sure how much difference using these would make when compared to another type of silk pillowcase... none the less, I'm seriously impressed by these and would certainly recommend them to anyone else who (like me!) wakes up with a birds nest on their head every morning!
I'm definitely a convert.
SilkSkin products are available to buy online here or in Harvey Nichols. Would love to know if any of you have tried these, or like to sleep on silk... any other converts?
Thanks for the post... I'll have to give silk ago, I have just recently decovered I have an allergy to dust mites..

Also wrapping the hair with a satin hair scarf at night, does wonders for the hair. My hair has grown immensely from doing this.

I have heard about the benefits of silk pillowcases years ago, but actually they were hard to find! It seems they are getting mainstream now, which is good, as they might become less pricier! THanks for the post Fleur!
ReplyDeleteThese sound great! Wonder if they are available here in Australia? I change my pillowcase everyday to help control blemishes.
ReplyDeleteI blogged about it here http://danniibeauty.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-often-do-you-change-your-pillowcase.html
I've been hearing about these for a while and I'd quite like to give it a go but then again, I'm not sure if I'm fussed enough to bother. I'd definitely like to wake up without a bird's nest head though!xx

ReplyDeleteI have naturally curly hair and like to shower at night. My hair is dry when I go to bed (I try to avoid using the blow dryer so I don't damage my hair more) but it always look like a big curly frizzy mess when I wake up. On rare occasion I wake up and it looks curly and great, but most of the time, no. I'm really going to have to try this out. Glad you posted this :)
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Stephanie! cannot stand silk, makes my hair so static! and unfortunately cannot stand the slippery feeling along my legs and such, I need my duvets to cuddle me :D
ReplyDeleteI will have to suggest this to my Mother - Personally my hair is polker straight but my Mum struggles with frizzy hair! We should try this!

I actually participated in a survey for the company, along with many others, which proved no significant improvement for any level they promise - so your the first out of us 100 with good results.
ReplyDeletetry www.silkkiss.co.uk for the exact same product at a much cheaper price...silk is more expensive but very durable, therefore proving value for money in the long run
ReplyDeleteBeware of cheap copies who advocate shiny silk which makes your head and face sweat! SILKSKIN was designed for beauty & hair care. Great product with proven results - Also stocked by top retailers. The product was researched for two years before it went onto the market,5 years ago. It has won awards and is used by many celebs. Not just a shiny silk pillowcase on a website. There is a great offer on at the moment too...
