Benefit's 'They're Real!' Review

Benefit sent me a sample of their newest mascara release weeks ago, and instead of posting a review straight away, I've given the product a thorough road testing to see for myself if their sensational claims can possibly be true.

Benefit's 'They're Real' Mascara claims to give you such amazing, glossy lashes that people might actually mistake them for fake ones. I'm instantly sceptical!

So onto the review.

The packaging is nice, quite vintage looking.

The wand itself is rubber and quite easy to use. The bristles extend onto the end of the brush to allow you to catch the lashes right in the corner of your eyes and (according to Benefit) create that 'doe-eyed look'. This works in theory, but the end of the brush does tend to collect excess product, so it does need wiping off on the neck of the tube to make sure the right amount is on the brush.

The formulation is quite 'wet', which I'm normally not a big fan of as it tends to slick the lashes together, but I actually really like how this applies.

Here are my lashes before...

After one coat...

It gives you a nice, defined look while adding serious length to your lashes.

After two coats...

It dries to a glossy finish and therefore quite solid, so a second coat can cause a little clumping, but if you like the doll-eyed look then this is definitely the mascara for you! I personally prefer using just one coat, but it's all personal preference really.

The mascara has great staying power. It's not waterproof, but unless you have seriously watery eyes or get doused in water, this stuff ain't moving or flaking off till you want it to.

Overall? This mascara is wonderful. I'm a big fan. My lashes don't look fake, but they do look great!

The only issue is the price (£18.50). It does compare with other high end super-mascaras such as YSL Effet Faux Cils but I wouldn't repurchase it for the exact same reason why I stopped buying YSL on a regular basis... It isn't that much better than the best 'drugstore' mascaras (Maybelline 'The Falsies' and CoverGirl 'LashBlast' I'm looking at you!)

So overall, it is great and it is worth the money... but only if you tend to spend £18.50 on Mascara. Which I don't.

Would love to know if anyone else has tried this already? It's available now from Benefit stores, counters, and online.

  2. I got this the other day and I'm really happy with it, only paid 8.50 for it so I figured if it didn't do the job I didn't lose out on much, but as you said does give a nice finish :)

    Great review :)

  3. for me, it's a bit too expensive. i think drugstore mascaras can do the same job for a lower prize...

  4. Wow it does look amazing on the lashes... but £18.50 is a bit steep when as you said there are great drugstore mascaras out there. I think i will be sticking to my maxfactor false lash effect fusion.

    thanks for the review!

  5. I wouldn't shell out that much ££s on a mascara myself (my max would probs be £10 for an awesome one), does give big lashes though!

  7. Half of the 'drugstore' mascaras are around £12 these days, so theres not much difference in an £18 one anymore! x

  9. I thought the brush/wand was hard and plastic. But each to their own. x

  10. the formulation looks a bit too clumpy but it's hard to tell with mascara in photos. i'm more keen on a bristled brush, but the packaging is lovely as usual.

  11. Per usual, I love the packaging and advert that Benefit comes up with! But, the price is a little too high for my taste. I much prefer experimenting with drugstore brands myself. Thank you for posting photos though because I've been wanting to see this mascara in action :)

  20. I just wrote a review and had pretty much the same opinion as you! Very wet and tends to clump if you're not careful but it IS a great mascara. I agree about the price though, I can't really be bothered to pay that price whenever I run out.

I recently found a collection 2000 mascara in poundland and it really compares! It is super lengthening and defining, I wouldn't know the difference between the two... other than the price! xx

  24. I don't like really much this mascara, it dries too much lashes and the price is too high for me. I like only the packaging! :D

  25. I got a sample of this mascara in a Sephora store with a purchase, I was not sold. I do however, like the Fairy Drops Mascara, as well as Benefits Bad Gal Lash, but still prefer good ole' Lash Blast by Covergirl.

  26. I absolutely love Benefits Mascara's. They are the one non-drugstore brand I love and will repurchase! (i do own one mac mascara and while i like it alot, benefits or maybeline's are both better!

  32. I tried this at a benefit counter recently and the mua applied it on top of the mascara i was already wearing and even then I could see a dramatic difference - amazing! I too am put off by the price though, I always turn to Maybelline for a good, well-priced mascara! Possibly on the Christmas list though!! x
