Naked Disappointment

I want to start this post off by saying that I am generally a huge fan of Urban Decay, especially their 'Naked' range. Therefore, the idea of Urban Decay adding a highlighter to their naked range really excited me, and in theory the 'Illuminated' Shimmer Powder for the face and body is a fabulous idea.
However, I really didn't like this product, and here's why...
The packaging is bulky and cardboard. Not good for those who travel, or like to keep all of their makeup in a makeup bag. Something I could live with if the product was amazing... but it's not.
It is simply WAY too glittery. We are talking 'Oooh this looks SO pretty' when you first look at it, to thinking... Oh, maybe this wouldn't work on my face. Under outside/natural lighting, this is the epitome of an unsubtle highlighter. It has big flecks of glitter and easily accentuates any large pores you have.
Yes, it can be applied very lightly for a more natural effect, but when you're spending £20 on a product, you want it to deliver what it claims to, right? This product might be ok for a night out, but it's way too much for everyday (for me, at least!)
I was really disappointed by this. I was expecting a beautifully subtle illuminating powder (akin to Soap & Glory's 'Glow All Out' or the Hourglass illuminating powders) but what we have here is by far the shimmer-iest disco-ball highlighter that I own. Urban Decay are often the champions of bright, fun shades, but their Naked range is all about the opposite: natural, neutral colours that are perfect for everyday.

Sorry Urban Decay, but this isn't a winner in my books! I'm hugely eager to get my mitts on the Naked3 palette though... from what I've seen online, it looks like a beauty!

Have any of you tried this highlighter? Any fans out there, or do you agree with me on this one?

  1. Pet hate in a highlighter! Reminds me of Twilight! Thanks for the heads up.

  2. We don't have UD here in Turkey but The Balm-Mary Loumanizer is a similar highlighter and I used to use NARS Albatross until I got it. Way too pigmented, too "in your face" highlighter and I thought just the same when I first tried it. But the point is, I LOVE very intense highlighters and as I got used to it, I loved it and sold Albatross through my blog right away!
Now, think of Mary Loumanizer as UD's this product, you might see in a short time that you actually really like it. But of course there is always the other possibility that you won't.

  13. It comes as a surprise that an Urban Decay product is not worth buying, but I really appreciate your honest review here. From the pictures you've posted it really looks extremely shimmery. I'm currently using the Burberry Fresh Glow Nude Radiance which is a fluid base which adds a natural luminous effect to my skin. And on days where I need a little extra I use the Hourglass ambient lighting palette. I've been really happy with those 2 products!

I think it's one of those things you would need to sample at the store before you buy, asking one of the UD team to apply it on to you. I am on the look out for a new highlighter, but I have my eye on Bobbi Brown's :)

  70. I agree. I swatched this in the store because I too love the UD Naked line. It's far too glittery for the face unless you're going for a glitter fairy look. It's expensive, but I use Chantecaille's petals de Rose highlighter. It's beautifully packaged, just plain pretty on the face, and it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin.

  71. You are right about this one, but I also think some Naked 1 shades have too much glitter and fall outs. I was a little disappointed when I bought it. And also didn't like the stiff brush inside.
