Dutch Braid Inspiration

Today’s post is to go alongside a video I made for the Beauty Recommended channel this week, and it’s all about my current hair obsession: Dutch braids! If you don’t quite know what a ‘Dutch’ braid is, or why it’s different to a French plait, then read on…

 

Dutch plaits (or braids) look much more ‘3D’ than traditional french plaits, with the braid itself sitting on top of the hair instead of looking like it’s all woven in on itself (a la french!).

They are really easy to do once you get the hang of them. You essentially add sections of hair into the braid from the underneath the braid itself. If you want to see how I created my two looks, then you can check out the video below...

In this post, I wanted to show you some braid inspiration, as once you learn to perfect this fiddly technique, the world of braiding is your oyster! Here are some of my favourite styles I’ve seen online that I want to try next (and if you're looking for some awesome hair blogs to follow, I've linked all their sites below each picture!)

If you want to perfect your Dutch braid technique it’s worth getting your hands on a lightweight dry shampoo or texturising spray. In the video I’ve used Pantene’s Instant Refresh dry shampoo because it’s super lightweight and doesn’t leave a white residue, so it’s perfect for adding a little texture and volume to the style without leaving any noticeable residue.

It’s also a good idea to use hairspray to help keep the style in place (especially if you’ve got layers that tend to make a bid for freedom towards the end of the day!) One with a lighter hold, like the Nioxin Niospray works really well as it’s not a strong, freeze-hold, so doesn’t leave the style looking too ‘solid’ but still helps to stop everything from slipping around and keeps your braid in place for as long as possible.

Lastly, it’s also worth using an intensive treatment on your hair like the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor, if you do braids like this regularly, as it will help minimise any damage to the hair strands from pulling the braid out when your’e making it look big, messy and gorgeous.
