Foreo Luna PLAY - Review

When this teeny tiny product arrived on my doorstep this week, I couldn’t wait to try it. I’m a sucker for anything in miniature as I travel a lot and am constantly looking for products that will lighten my load yet still perform as well as their full size counterparts. This in particular caught my eye as I’ve never seen anything else quite like it.
I’ve been a fan of the Foreo Luna for months now. It’s a sonic face brush that is not only compact and ergonomic to use, but the charge lasts up to seven months and the silicone bristles are thirty five times more hygienic than traditional nylon-bristled face brushes. It dries quickly and doesn’t encourage bacterial growth. I’ve used most of the other face brushes on the market over the years. I’ve liked some, hated others, but the Foreo is by far my favourite. It makes sonic cleansing easy, convenient and (less-importantly!) makes it look good too!
The latest addition to the Luna line-up is the ‘Play’ - a miniature version of the original that fits into the palm of the hand. I’ve tried both the full-sized version and the mini, and I have found that the performance of the mini is equally as effective as the full size, so the concept of the Play really excited me.
It does exactly the same thing as the original, but in miniature. You wet and apply your cleanser (I usually remove my makeup beforehand using micellar water to let the cleanser really do it’s work) I currently use it with Elemental Herbology’s Manuka Cleanser which I find works an absolute dream. You work the product into the skin in circular motions using the device, which uses sonic vibrations to help deep clean the skin and pores. Using the full size version has made such a difference to my skin, especially so to the pores around my nose.
This tiny compact version is possibly the cutest beauty gadget I’ve ever seen. It’s also only £29 so it puts the facial brush into a more affordable category, however there is one single flaw to this little gem… it isn’t re-chargeable. The single charge it comes with lasts for around 100 uses, which would last me for about a year as I only use it twice a week, however I do think that it’s a major flaw to not be able to recharge it, as it does detract from the initial concept of being more affordable. I don’t think it would deter me from repurchasing it personally, as I would probably want a new one after that period of time, considering it’s used on your face, but I know that it would be a deterrantant for some.

This will certainly hold a permanent place in my travel bag from now on…or semi-permanent until the battery runs out at least!

What do you guys think? Are you a fan of facial brushes, have you ever tried the Luna and would you be tempted to add this to your skincare routine? It’s available from Cult Beauty online here.

  2. If I didn't own the full size one, I would definitely buy this.

  3. I agree that it should be rechargeable but I guess they're hoping that once it runs out people will then purchase the full size version because they liked the mini so much.

  5. I've been looking at getting a Luna for a while as I like the idea they're silicon rather than a brush. This one is super cute and perfect for travelling x

  6. I used to use the Clarisonic, but my skin doesn't agree with physical exfoliation anymore.

  10. Oh no! Thought it is cheaper, Just the thought that I'll only be getting a finite number of uses out of this is a little off putting unfortunately.

  12. These facial brushes are amazing and I want to try the miniature so bad as it is more affordable but the fact that I am buying something to only last a year or maybe less if I use it more than once a week is non-sense to me :/ It really put me off buying it x

  14. I have the full size Luna Mini 2 and I love that so much, noticed a difference in my skin after using a month of using it. When I first started seeing this on the web and the site I fell in love for how cute it is, it's a perfect size. Thought this was a great size for travel specially if your not to keen on bringing your full Luna or mini with you. Also it would be good also for a gift for someone or if your thinking on buying the full Luna but your aren't to sure about the product.

Will be saving up to buy the mini!

  16. I just ordered the mini, as I think it seems the most cost effective of the three sizes, although the PLAY is very cute. £29 does seem reasonable too, but it's quite wasteful to have to just throw this out every time you need a new one!

    1. I agree!!!! What are you supposed to do when it runs out of battery? Throw it again and buy another one? That is so wasteful!! Not tempted one bit by this.

  18. I personally think that it's totally ridiculous to create a product that can't be charged.

  19. I don't like throwaway things like this. The big Luna however has been a revelation for my skin. My skin is quite sensitive and oily and dry at the same time. The Luna makes my skin look bright and smooth. I like that you can use any cleaner to suit the way my skin is behaving.

  20. I've actually never tried a facial brush, which is horrendous - I really want to give one a go because of how bad my pores are at the moment! This one sounds fab, and a lot more affordable than some other pieces out there, but I would be a little put off my it not being rechargeable too.

  21. It sounds like a great concept, but incredibly wasteful as you cannot recharge it, or insert new batteries it would seem? I'll be sticking to my Michael Todd brush for now :)

  24. What a great concept! If after the batteries run out the bristles still seem good, you could probably use it without turning it on.

  27. wow, this is tiny but it sound like it's just as effective as the original size.
I've been wanting the original for ages as I've read such good things, but this mini is defo worth having a look at if you're someone who travels alot. Personally though for everyday use It'd feel like such a waste because it's non rechargable :(

  28. And I bet the material is not recyclable either. Let's put more crap into this world...just in case there isn't enough already. ;P

  29. I think the point of this is to try it out before you buy the full size. If the battery runs out then you've used it enough to justify buying the full size. I'm very tempted to give it a go. Because if I spent £100 and then got bored of it after a few weeks I'd be annoyed but £30 isn't so bad.

  32. I've never tried a Foreo luna but I'd love to. I cleanse my face with the brown face cleansing brush once a week but I wouldn't bring it with me when I travel because it does take up space in my makeup bag. This one would fit perfectly, it's just sad the battery can't be replaced. Thanks for the in depth review :)

  33. I've been half thinking about trying the Luna full size so ordered one of these as soon as a saw them - figure it's a great way to try it before committing to the full size. Plus I travel a lot too so it's perfect :)

  38. It all sounded perfect until the non-rechargeable point...! What a shame and how wasteful. I've always been intrigued by the Luna but it just felt too much for something I don't know if I'd really enjoy using, or see benefits from. Mind you I did buy a Clarisonic and well, that's gathering dust and most likely mould somewhere - ew! BUT that's my point - it was alright but I didn't love it.
£29 is a very good price but the fact it's pointless after 100 uses is a real shame.

  48. Oou... I was looking to buy it for my BBF, but... I don't know. I think the battery's life is too short (just two months using twice a week).
Thank you very much for your reviewing. It's very helpful (and sorry for my english... i'm a spanish girl ^_^ ).

  49. The full size Luna works wonders but maybe they should concentrate their efforts on making a traveling size one that is rechargeable. I agree that this little one is very wasteful.

  50. Great for travel also It makes it affordable for anyone wanting to see if sonic technology works for them and I guess though not very environmentally friendly, albeit many beauty products aren't, costwise based on your use it would be four years for the price of a Clarisonic.

  51. It's so small and cute! I love how it comes in different colours and I feel like the fact it's not re-chargeable forces you to buy a new one which is probably better for your skin so I kind of like that 'flaw'.

  55. I was instantly drawn to this little gadget, and went on to check feelunique where I found the Foreo Luna Go, which seems to be roughly the same size but rechargeable. However, it doesn't appear on Foreo's website... could you help me Fleur? could this be a feelunique exclusive or something of the sort?
