Hair oils are the 'in' thing right now. Every single brand from super-duper high end to cheap as chips high street seems to be bringing out their own variant on the trend.
Multi-use oils can do wonders for the hair when used as a treatment, serum or styling product, but they all claim to do the same thing! Which ones are worth forking out for? Which one is the best for your hair type?
Well I've put seven of the best to the test!
(l-r: Moroccan Oil, Kerastase Huile Celeste, L'oreal Professional Mythic Oil,
Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue, Kerastase Elixir Ultime,
Macadamia Healing Oil Spray, VO5 Miracle Treatment)
1. Best for Shine
If it's sleek, shiny locks you're looking for then Kerastase Elixir Ultime is your answer. This rich formula is pleasantly fragranced and leaves your hair super shiny when used as a styling product. The packaging is very glam too, but so it should be for £27.85!
2. Best for Fine Hair
Good news for all the fine haired girls out there! The cheap alternative, 'Miracle Concentrate' by VO5 is my top recommendation for finer hair. This formula is much lighter than the others and smooths nicely without weighing your hair down too much. Only £4.99 for 50ml from Tesco.
3. Best Treatment
The most expensive of the bunch, but seemingly the most potent. The Shu Uemura Essence Absolue smells divine and leaves your hair feeling equally as heavenly. Apply this to dry hair and leave for 30 minutes before shampooing off to treat the most coarse, unruly manes. A luxury treat for your hair at £32.75, but you get 150ml so it will last you a lifetime!
4. Most Convenient
I'm all about convenience, so for me the 'classic' hair oil on the scene, Moroccan Oil is a total winner. You can buy it in this handy 25ml size that lasts for months, but is small enough to carry in your handbag for on-the-go defrizzing! I've always got this little bottle with me for hair emergencies! Expensive but worth it at £12.85 for 25ml and £30.45 for 100ml
5. Best for Summer
Kerastase Huile Celeste is without a doubt the top choice if you're looking for a do-it-all oil to take away with you. Not only does it help protect your hair from the sun, sea and chlorine but it also contains reflective micro-particles to add a glamourous shimmery finish to your locks. The spray bottle doesn't allow for the most accurate application (you have to be careful not to spray it too close to your hair or you'll end up more grease ball than beach goddess!) but it is convenient for reapplying throughout the day. At £15.60 for 125ml, it's a cheaper alternative to Elixir Ultime, but is much lighter and not the best for using as a treatment.
6. Average at Everything
L'Oreal Professional's Mythic Oil is a bit of a middle of the road product. It works, and at £14.95 for 125ml, it's cheaper than some of the others but it doesn't stand out in the hair-oil crowd for me!
7. Don't Waste Your Money!
There's only one oil I've tried to date that I have actively disliked. Macadamia's Healing Oil Spray is a very light weight formula but the spray application and chunky bottle make it a pain to use. It's very easy to end up with greasy looking hair when using this and it has a smell that reminds me of Theirry Mugler's Angel (and not in a good way!) £12.70 for 60ml, it's cheaper than some of the others but I would recommend forking out a little more to see really great results.
Overall, If I was going to chose just one product to stick with, it would be Moroccan Oil... the original and the best! Shu Uemura and Kerasatse Elixir Ultime come a very close joint second in my books as I prefer them when used as a hair treatment, but it's the convenience of the mini bottle that nudges Moroccan Oil into the lead for me personally!
I hope this little round up helped you decide which oil would be best for you! Do any of you have a favourite hair oil? Would love to hear your thoughts on this hair care 'craze'!
Thanks for this. It's very helpful x

I have the Shu Uemura oil and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I receive a sample of it through BIRCHBOX and now I can not live without it. It is truly liquid gold for your hair.
ReplyDeletevery informative, thankyou fleur (:
ReplyDeletedoes the moroccan oil give shine as well?
http://risingsun-fashionbeauty.blogspot.com
I would have to disagree about the Macadamia's Healing Oil I never tired the spray but the oil is very good and it actually contains more argan oil in it than the Moroccan Oil but maybe I'll try some of the other ones
ReplyDeleteMy hair is pretty thick and coarse :( I guess I'll have to drop by Shu Uemura and pick it up!! Can you also use it as a hair serum and leave it in or is it too oily?
ReplyDeletePlease check me out :) at ykhearts.blogspot.com
thank yor for the review :)
ReplyDeleteI just got the morrocan oil. I think it works great. until I saw that it had a lot of silicons in it! HUUUUUUGE BUMMER!
Do you know if the Shu Uemura does so as well?
thank you :)

Disagree macadama oil is great and you can get in a smaller bottle
ReplyDeletePaul mitchell smoothing serum is amazing. It tames frizz and adds shine to your hair without looking greasy...plus it smells delicious! I also use Moroccan oil :)

You've just confirmed what I've been thinking for a while now - I need Moroccan Oil in my life!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post - really helpful :)

Great post, I really like Elemis Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt but I really want to try Moroccan Oil too.

Thankyou Fleur, such a helpful post. I've always wanted to know how moroccan oil faired against others x
ReplyDeleteGreat post :)
ReplyDeleteI was going to buy Moroccan Oil but realized it was nothing but silicone.
In the end I bought the Kerasatse Elixir Ultime to help tame my damaged blonde hair (Well water sucks). I love it xx

I also disagree about the Macadamia oil. Admittedly I have the oil and not the spray but I think it's fab. Much better for my thick hair than Morrocan oil.
ReplyDeleteI agree you with the others who say give the Macademia oil (not the spray) another go..I have a LOT of dry curly hair and it's fab both for the curls and when I straighten it. and the small bottle lasts forever!
ReplyDeleteI've heard so much about the morrocan oil!
ReplyDeletei really want to give that a try sometime, great review!
Krissy xoxo
Thank you this has helped me! xx
ReplyDeleteI like these types of blogs. Could you do more of them please.
ReplyDeleteIf they make the Vo5 Miracle Concentrate in the states I'd probably like that one the best!
ReplyDeleteI have the original Macadamia Oil and I really like it. I don't think that I would like the spray, though, as I don't really like sprays. Macadamia Oil is also a lot easier for me to find. I live in the US and can't even find Moroccan Oil to try it. The Keratase one sounds great, though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, I've been wanting an oil for ages but couldn't decide if moroccan oil was worth the money until now. Can't wait to try it. Do you put it on dry or damp hair?
ReplyDeleteArgan oil products are another less expensive alternative for the girls wanting to use Moroccan Oil. I've been using Argan shampoo, conditioner, and oil (purchased very cheaply at Sally's Beauty Supply because I did not want to pay for Moroccan Oil having read too many mixed reviews on it). My hair texture is fine, highlighted blonde, and gets very damaged from heating products and chemical treatments. I've been using Argan oil for the past two months and it has been a miracle product for my hair. It's very moisturizing and I would recommend it for all hair types. The oil serum is great because it does not weigh my hair down but keeps it moisturized throughout the day.
ReplyDeleteI have the Moroccan oil and love it also. I now want to try the Shu Uemura and Kerasatse Huile Celeste. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeletethis is so funny because i LOVE macadamia oil! the smell, the product it's self, everything! it's so crazy how one person can totally love a product and another person hate it. :) i love the smell so much i even spritz it on my wrists as perfume every now and again.
ReplyDeletei can't wait to try out Moroccan oil, though!
I find it strange that you put up the Macadamian Oil spray as the "Don't Waste your Money" option - I use the brand's "Healing Oil Treatment" on a regular basis on my ends, which have a propensity to be quite dry and this is the only thing I have found which doesn't make them greasy, but does the job to hydrate them more than my conditioner alone could. Maybe you just tried the wrong product, because this oil treatment is a good deal thicker than just the spray would be. Overall though, I think this is a really great post idea, and will be on the look-out for the Kerastase and Shu Uemura options to try out as well! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I LOVE the Moroccan oil. My new favorita has actually been the Amika Obliphica Oil Treatment that I got in my birchbox! It's fabulous.

where can i get the morracan oil? please someone let me know
ReplyDeletex
My favourite one as got to be the Shu Uemura but I also love the original Macademia Oil in the regular formula, works way better than Morrocan Oil, the matching intensive mask is amazing too.

I need to get trying more hair oils! Have always been a bit wary but I received the L'Oreal Professional mythic oil at the event last week and really like it! Saw you there but didn't manage to say hi :)
ReplyDeletePS. Random but spotted the lentils you were talking about in your last video in Waitrose today so picked some up- good for lunches! xx
Since moving back home, ive been using my mums kerastase elixer, its amazing, but OMG didnt realize it was so expensive, figured it said loreal on it, thus would be like a fiver... oops! lol

:)
I use Alterna's Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Mist. It works well as a heat protectant and for preventing frizz. It's a bit pricey at 26 USD, but it is worth every cent.
ReplyDeleteI heard that the Morroccan Oil has a very distinct smell to it that can sometimes make people feel sick? Have you had any issues with it?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

ive never considered using a hair oil, mine is just too fine and greasy :(

For those of you girls living in a country where Amazon does not have a headquarters, be careful when purchasing Maroccan Oil. The small bottle ended up costing me almost 30 euros (double the price) because of shipping costs. I learned with my mistake: there are a few UK based beauty sites that have this product and their shipping costs are not insane.
ReplyDeleteThe cheap alternative to find Argan Oil (the main ingredient on Maroccan Oil) less concentrated of course, is one of the Schwarzkopf lines for supermarkets/drugstores, called Gliss. It's the yellow one. The spray leave-in conditioner and the spray on serum have this oil, and some other products too (just look up on the ingredient list for Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil).
It's fairly good for the price (about 6 or 8 euros per 200 ml), and detangles fine hair divinely, without weighing it down.
I swear by the Morrocan oil! I live in Canada and you can pick up a 100ml bottle for around $40 which makes it alot cheaper than back in England! Definately the best product for my thick frizzy hair! <3

I absoloutly love the v05 miracle concerntrate as i have fine hair and it makes my hair so soft! i havent tried any other but im definatly debating wether to get the moroccan oil it sounds lovely thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love Shu Uemura for my hair!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone about Macadamia Oil Treatment. I don't think I would ever use their spray, in fear of my hair looking too greasy, but the oil treatment is great! I can't compare it to Moroccan Oil because I can't find it anywhere, but I know they're both great products. Give Macadamia Oil Treatment a try sometime! Although, I know your girl Ingrid swears by Moroccan Oil so it may be hard to switch you over ;)
ReplyDeleteHair Oil is a great way to promote hair growth by conditioning and moisturizing your hair and scalp.
ReplyDeletehydratherma naturals daily moisturizing growth lotion
Having good hair oil is not enough eating the right kind of food also helps. Harmful foods such as canned and processed food which do not protect your hair instead damage it, should not be eaten. Fresh coconut is very good for your hair. For beautiful and strong hair, massage your scalp with hair oil and leave it overnight. You can also use a steamed towel to cover your hair for half an hour for best results. This gives your hair a shiny and lustrous look.
ReplyDeleteI just bought the Kerastase!! #excited
