Tried & Tested: Moroccan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner

I was given a set of the Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair shampoo and conditioner by a hairdresser friend of mine recently, and I was really excited to finally give them a whirl. I've been a fan of the Moroccan Oil treatment oil for a long time now and have more recently fallen in love with their styling creme, so had been eyeing up their Shampoo & Conditioner for a while...

The Moisture Repair duo claims to gently cleanse while infusing hair with argan oil, fatty acids, proteins and nutrients while leaving hair soft, shiny and full of body. They are sulphate, phosphate and paraben free, although do contain silicones. They are also marketed as colour safe and best for chemically damaged hair.

The packaging is a nice matte-rubberised finish which I like, and both the shampoo and conditioner carry the heavy, signature 'Moroccan Oil' smell (which I love, but I can imagine some don't) This, combined with the thick texture of both the products makes these feel very luxurious to use. For me, they feel like a bit of a treat for my hair.

Performance-wise though, they didn't quite tick all of the boxes for me. Both of the products are very nourishing and left my hair feeling really soft and smooth. However, when used together for more than one successive wash, I found that they noticeably weighed my hair down, leaving it looking a little lank. Not greasy, just heavy and without it's usual movement. This really surprised me, as I have quite dry, colour treated hair that normally loves heavy, nourishing products.

Having said that, I do really like both of these, and will continue to use them... just not together! I've found that if I use the Moroccan Oil shampoo with a lighter conditioner, or a more clarifying shampoo with the Moroccan Oil conditioner, they both work really well and leave my hair looking healthy and shiny, yet still with a little 'oomph'.

I've definitely enjoyed using these, and will use them up, but for the price? (£15.85 each... gulp!) I think there are better, cheaper alternatives for my hair personally. If you have severely dry and damaged hair I think these might be a good choice, but for those of you who, like me, have only slightly dry, colour treated hair, they might be a bit 'much'.

They do also make a volumising version for finer hair, which I would be interested in trying out at some point as it's meant to be lighter, but it would have to be seriously good to justify the price tag!

Random candle-adoration photo. Still obsessed with this - more info here.

  1. I adore the Moroccan oil products! I'm not sure it quite beats Macademia oil for me, but they do leave my hair feeling lovely and shiny xxx

  2. I've never actually never tried moroccan oil product! I heard about it when the morrocan oil hype started and apparently it was great for your hair :) but lately I've read in some magazines that it might actually make your hair "worn out", if that makes sense?! Well I have no idea, I might see for myself! I'm also very curious about the Macadamia products - they seem pretty similar to me :D

  5. I tried the shampoo a couple of months ago and it was so disappointing, especially for the price and not at all worth the hype! I know exactly what you mean about the feel of weighing your hair down (I have thick hair so it was even more surprising). This shampoo also really irritated my scalp leaving me with some oh so lovely dandruff which has only just subsided after a month of not using this shampoo, so unfortunately I would not recommend it! The only plus of this shampoo for me was the smell :)

  10. They weigh down my hair, too. I don't use the shampoo any more, just the conditioner. And I don't use it every day. I use it more like a treatment every couple days. It makes my hair feel so soft!!

  14. I purchased both of these in the light version as I have damaged very fine hair and the first wash was amazing.. but you are right, the more I used them the worse it looked. Now I use them every 3rd or 4th wash to put some nutrients back into my hair, but I imagine I wont repurchase after they run out..

  44. Ooh, interesting! I definitely prefer to mix and match when it comes to hair care, I always pick up a more clarifying shampoo with a very heavy conditioner because my hair can be quite dry and damaged on the ends but it gets very greasy at the roots, so I find that the perfect combo for me. I love the random candle photo as well!

  64. I used these two for about a year and I can not reccommend long time use. I have quite dry, fine hair but lots of it and a rather dry scalp. After some months of usage I started to get an intense irritation at the back of my head, my scalp there was really itchy. It took me some time to pin it down to these two...but since I stopped using them, the irritation is almost completely gone. I still love the oil, but the shampoo and conditioner are a big NO NO for me now. ( I did use them continually for over a year about 2 - 3 times a week )

  87. The problem you face for using too much shampoo that is hair loss. Shampoo containing the various elements. But every element is not helpful for hair. The SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate) is injurious to the scalp and is one of the main reasons for hair drop. So do not use excess shampoo to your hair . Use shampoo every 1-2 days but not using excess shampoo. When you use too much shampoo it create too much lather and it thinned your hair. On the other hand using excessive shampoo dry and hares your hair.
