Three of the Best: Facial Sunscreens

Having had such glorious weather over the past few weeks, and the fact that many of you will be heading off on your summer holidays over the next month or two, I thought I would share my three favourite facial sunscreens with you today.
Now, I wear SPF50 on my face everyday anyway...
but when I'm out and about in the sunshine, or on holiday, I make sure I re-apply numerous times throughout the day with a more purse-friendly option (The Prevage Triple Defence cream I use daily is £65 a pop so I'm not really going to be popping that on four times a day!)
My first choice is Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Sun Defence for Face with SPF 50. This cream is very thick and ever so slightly greasy. I really like this however, because it doesn't just block out the suns harmful rays, but also leaves your skin intensely moisturised. This is a great choice for those of you who suffer from dry skin. I also use this on delicate areas like my chest, or on any freckles or moles that might be on show. If you don't like the distinctive smell of Eight Hour cream, this one might not be for you as it is quite heavily scented (I personally love the smell and I've used it for a few years now so it now reminds me of holidays which is nice!) You can pick this up for £21.25 for 50ml with free delivery from feelunique.com
My second choice is St. Tropez's SPF 50 with Tan Enhancer. This is an option I go for when I'm looking to get a bit more colour, but still want to protect my skin. It's a much more lightweight cream than the Elizabeth Arden and it's formulated with Melanobronze, which helps to stimulate Melatonin in the skin, to help enhance your tan naturally (surprisingly for a fake tan brand... there is not actually any fake tan in here, so don't be scared of any streaks etc!) It's a little cheaper than the EA option at £13.50 for 50ml with free delivery.
My final pick has got to be Piz Buin's In Sun Radiant Face Cream. While I own this in a slightly lower SPF of 30, it tends to be my sunscreen of choice for sunny days at home, where the sun isn't quite as powerful. Piz Buin has long been my sunscreen-of-choice for the body, and the smell for me is now synonymous with sunshine. I love it. This SPF is non-greasy and despite having 'Radiant' in the name, doesn't contain any fake tan or added sparkle. It's water and sweat resistant too so perfect if you're out and about in the sunshine or prone to getting hot and bothered in the sun! This is the cheapest of the bunch at £10.99 for 40ml but also comes highly recommended from me. (It is also currently buy one get one free in Boots!)

I hope you all had a lovely weekend in the sun, and thoroughly enjoy any holidays you have planned this summer! There will be a few more of these little posts targeted at summer products, so if you're looking for holiday-friendly product recommendations, then keep your eyes peeled! On another note... if you're not already following me on BlogLovin', please do! I find it's the best way to keep up to date with all of my favourite blogs! Check out my page HERE.

  1. I always wear an SPF 50 too - to avoid getting wrinkles when I'm older from the UV rays, haha.
I loved this post so I'm looking forward to more posts based on summer products!

  2. Oooh if only I knew about these before going on holiday! I use a No7 one which is perfect but it goes incredibly runny when it gets warm, so much that its almost difficult to use! I've toyed with the idea of the Clarins ones but not sure why I need to spend that much money on them!

The St Tropez one sounds great, I wonder if there are tan enhancer ones for the body too? I know Lancaster do an aftersun thats similar! <3

  3. Thanks for this. I currently live in Spain and am moving to Qatar in September so finding good facial suncream is always a priority. I think I´ll give this Piz Buin one a try.

  4. I love EA, it's great! However I can agree that some may find the smell too much, I love Shesido or Neutrogena too:)

  9. I've being on holiday and I only used SPF 30 because I wanted to get a tan but it still does the job! I love La Roche Posay's version: they do SPF 50 too. It's the only one that doesn't break me out!

  17. You don't need to worry about the difference in SPF that you have. Do a quick research read (it will literally take seconds)! SPF 30 blocks 97% of rays, SPF 50 block about 98% of rays. Anything beyond that is almost an infinitesimal increase because SPF is a curved measure (SPF 30 blocks 93%!). Obviously there's nothing wrong with a higher SPF, but it's certainly not worth worrying about. When you're in a sunnier place just make sure to apply at least every 2 hours as the chemicals break down. 8 hour sunscreen is a myth. :) Sorry for the rant, but as a pale, freckled redhead, I like to spread this info. Love the blog, Fleur!

  18. I love Piz Buin sunscreen, I love the texture and the smell! It is kind of hard to find one in my country, I hope to find the one with spf 50 with tan accelerating proprieties for my upcoming Greece trip.

  19. My favourite one is the Origins SPF35 A perfect world one, but I have tried the elizabeth arden eight hour spf15 one and loved that only it wasn't high enough protection. I have been wondering about the spf50 one for a while so will definitely pick it up next time :)! X

  29. I feel like facial sunscreens depend a lot on personal preference! I've enjoyed one that broke my sister out. However, I haven't really heard one bad thing about Elizabeth Arden. It's also always nice when a tinted moisturizer or light foundation has SPF for day use!

  30. I would personally not wear any of those, they all have chemical sunscreen which is bad for your skin!!!! They break down in the sunlight and can act like free radicals, damaging your skin cells. Additionally most of them are endocrine disrupters. I only use mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Here's a good article about it: http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/your-sunscreen-might-be-poisoning-you

  38. The Elizabeth Arden sunscreen is great. I use it every day too. I wrote about it on my blog saying that it was the best sunscreen i'd ever used. The SPF is high which is great because a SPF 15 in a foundation just doesn't cut it. This one doesn't smell like the stereotypical sunscreen either, it's sweeter and of course smells like all the other eight hour products (their lip balm is incredible too!). I definitely recommend this one.
This is the post that I wrote about it too, http://smashleighbeauty.blogspot.co.nz/2013/05/the-best-sunscreen.html

  39. I use the Neutrogena Sport Face SPF 70 sunscreen I the stuff is seriously like a miracle worker; its not greasy, yet it helps moisturize and helps your make up stay on longer which was a nice surprise for a 10 dollar sunscreen:) Anyway I feel like I'm rambling but I have a full review in it here if your interested...

  42. Sunscreen is so important, but I read before applying more SPF than you need to can clog up your pores? =\ So I've been sticking to lower SPFs unless I'm going to the beach or will be outdoors all day.

  46. Hey Fleur!.. Do you have any tips on how do you reapply your sunscreen? I usually apply mine before leaving my house, and then I find it very hard to reapply, because i have makeup on, and I have really really oily skin, so my skin tends to attract a lot of dust and grime, I don't feel like adding more to that by applying sunscreen. I can always cleanse my face and start over again, but thats not really feasible as Im always traveling from one place to another.

    Thanks in advance!

  51. My skin is very dry-combination in the winter, and then it gets SUPER oily in the summer, it's crazy! So when I was looking for a face sunscreen, I was worried about buying one that will ultimately make my skin look greasy and/or break me out. Last year I used L'Oreal's ombrelle face sunscreen in SPF60, which was very tacky and glittery. This year I bought Clarins SPF40 sunscreen that was really thin and oily, I hated it. I bought Clinique's new face sunscreen which comes in a yellow tube for $25 CND that is SPF50 and I LOVE IT!! It absorbs well, it sits well under makeup, it hasn't broken me out and it's not greasy. I'm very happy, I may even pick up Clinique's City Block SPF40 because it's kind of like a tinted moisturizer too!

  52. I don't wear SPF on my face unless I am on holiday. I have recently moved to Australia though, so it is definitely a step I need to add into my routine, however I am a little confused. Do you put it on instead of moisturiser or after it? Thanks xx

  56. Your reviews are very timely for me. I absolutely must pick up some sunblock because I have very fair skin that burns easily and also tends to get dry. Out of the three you listed above I would be inclined to buy the first one because of the 50 SPF and moisturizing. Do you know which ones if any are vegan and cruelty free and available in the U.S.? (I live across the pond). I had been wondering how the the following Cruelty-Free Sunscreens recommended by Jenny Woods at Peta are but haven't tried any of them: Ocean Potion Sunblock Products; Trader Joe's Face and Body Cream; Alba Botanica's Very Emollient Sunblock; No-Ad's Sunblock Lotions. Are any of these available where you are and is there a chance you have or will review one of them? I love your beauty and fashion reviews and your YouTube videos.
