Battle of the Cleansing Balms!

Cleansing balms have taken the skin care world by storm in the past couple of years. What started with a few, became many, and now I have to admit it is not only difficult to pick 'the one' for you, but it's also tempting to chop and change every now and again.

For those new to cleansing balms, they are an oil-based cleanser that remains solid at room temperature. Warmed in the hands and massaged onto the skin, then removed with a warm, damp cloth (muslin or flannel, I personally prefer a flannel.) They cleanse beautifully, removing all traces of makeup while leaving the skin feeling exceptionally smooth, plump and hydrated. They are marketed for all skin types (yes, even oily) and especially good for those looking towards anti-ageing products.

Having used a balm cleanser exclusively for over a year, it's fair to say I'm a convert. I've never used anything else that makes my skin feel happier or more comfortable, and I would thoroughly recommend trying one out if you haven't before. I wouldn't say they are 'life changing' but they are certainly 'skin changing'!

I've tried my fair share of balms in the past year, so I thought I would give you a quick run down of each to help you navigate the world of cleansing balms a little easier...

Eve Lom Cleanser

Packaging: Very nice, but its' nothing special considering the price.
Ingredients: The Good - Chamomile, hop, clove & eucalyptus oils. The Bad - mineral oil, parabens.
This get's slammed frequently on skincare blogs for being packed with mineral oil. Personally my skin doesn't have a problem with mineral oil, but considering this is the most expensive cleanser in this blog post, the fact that it contains the cheapest ingredients does annoy me.
Performance: The original, but not necessarily the best. Eve Lom's cleanser was the one that 'changed the face of skincare' by introducing cleansing balms. Some swear by it, some loathe it. I have to admit, I did like this cleanser. It's lovely to use and effective at removing makeup, but I wasn't 'blown away' as some are.
Price: £55 for 100ml (Currently 10% off here)
Overall: Good, but not the best. Considering it's the most expensive... it should be better.
Score: 6/10

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

Packaging: Really nice, probably the best of this lineup.
Ingredients: The Good - A base of almond oil, along with elderberry, rose, mimosa and more. The Bad - None! No mineral oil, parabens etc. It does contain shea butter that may irritate or clog some skin, but I had no problem with this.
Performance: I really loved the texture of this, however it really stung my eyes, so I couldn't use it for removing my eye makeup. It also has a very strong herbal, spa-like scent. I used up my sample, but I wouldn't purchase it again. My mum loves it though so each to one's own!
Price: £39 for 105g (Currently 30% off here)
Overall: Very nice if you don't have sensitive eyes!
Score: 7/10

Emma Hardie 'Amazing Face' Natural Lift & Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm

Packaging: Very nice, feels heavy and looks luxurious too.
Ingredients: The Good - A base of grape seed and almond oil, moringa seed extract, wild sea fennel and vitamin E to name a few. The Bad - None!
Performance: To me, this is the cream of the crop when it comes to cleansing balms. The texture is like butter, the scent is subtle and pleasant, it removes all my makeup, doesn't sting my eyes, and my skin absolutely loves it! My skin feels amazing every single time I use this.
Price:  £34 for 100ml (Available with free international delivery here)
Overall: There is a lot of hype surrounding this cleanser and it is 100% deserved.
Score: 10/10

The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter

Packaging: Quite plain, flat metal container.
Ingredients: The Good - Olive oil. The Bad - Lots of synthetics. Most of the ingredients in this are synthetic. It also has shea butter, so perhaps better for those with dry skin, not prone to breakouts.
Performance: This worked pretty well for me. The consistency is more solid (like coconut oil) at room temperature. I found it a little greasy, but ok. My skin didn't see any noticeable difference when using this, but it was effective at removing makeup.
Price: £12 for 90ml (available here)
Overall: Good for £12, but not a scratch on some of the others available.
Score: 5/10

Ren No.1 Purity Cleansing Balm

Packaging: I've only used this in the old (tube) packaging, so can't comment.
Ingredients: Again, a base of almond oil and a list of others including camomile. The Bad - None! As always, Ren products are free from parabens, mineral oil, sulphates, silicones and synthetic colours & fragrances.
Performance: Nice to use, left my skin feeling happy and clean.
Price: £30 for 150ml (available here)
Overall: I loved this for the first half of the tube, towards the end it got very 'gritty' in texture. I've noticed this happening a tiny bit with a few cleansing balms, but this was the most noticeable difference from first opening it up, to finishing it. In light of this, I wouldn't purchase it again.
Score: 6/10

RMK Cleansing Balm

Packaging: I personally really like this frosted pink packaging. It's not the most luxe, but it's really pretty! The flip-top lid is also very user-friendly.
Ingredients: The Good - Jojoba oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil. The Bad - This was quite hard to uncover (annoyingly!) but it seems that while there are no parabens, it does contain mineral oil and a long list of synthetic ingredients, including waxes and silicones. Perhaps best to avoid this one if you have acne prone skin.
Performance: This smells of rose (can be a love/hate thing, I don't mind it.) I quite liked this, and thought it might be a keeper, until I tried the Emma Hardie alternative. In comparison, it leaves your skin a little greasy.
Price: £29 for 50g (Available here)
Overall: Nice, but not a keeper for me personally.
Score: 6/10

Balance Me Cleanse & Smooth Face Balm

Packaging: A tube, not the most practical for this texture of product (unless your bathroom is super warm, you have to squeeze... hard!)
Ingredients: Balance Me are one of those great companies who mean natural when they say 'natural'! This is 100% natural. The Good - Almond oil base with coconut, camellia, & rosehip oils, oatmeal, coriander, vitamin E & rosemary. The Bad - None!
Performance: This is the only cleansing balm that bucks the trend and is not totally smooth in texture. It has tiny little oatmeal particles for smoothing. personally I'm not a huge fan of this, and this is the one aspect of this balm that puts me off. My skin likes it, but I didn't love using it (especially for taking off my makeup!) You can't argue against the ingredients list, and the price is much more affordable than the others.
Price: £20 for 125ml (available here)
Overall: Great if you don't mind the oatmeal particles! My third personal favourite, and personally I think this is the best value for money considering all of the factors above.
Score: 8/10

Monu Cleansing Balm

Packaging: A huge pot! Average in quality, but fit for the job!
Ingredients: This is also a very natural choice, it contains a huge list of natural ingredients including almond, wheat germ, apricot, sunflower seed, blackcurrant, calendula, mimosa, bergamot, rose, rosehip & jasmine. The Bad - None!
Performance: This is much runnier than the others, but very smooth and effective. It smells amazing. Spa-like with a distinct citrus note. Easily second best next to Emma Hardie for me!
Price: £35 for 150ml (available with free international delivery here)
Overall: Almost on a par with Emma Hardie, but for a third less money gram for gram!
Score: 9/10

That's it for the balms I've tried! Have you tried a cleansing balm? Which is your favourite?

  6. I was really looking forward to this when you mentioned this in your video, and you didn't disappoint! I have had the Emma Hardie on my list to try for ages, and I have to buy it soon (whilst its on sale) but there are so many options to choose from, this is what I needed!
Heres a question for you: Normal cleanser or hot cloth cleanser? Which is better? I feel like I get a better clean with a hot cloth cleanser.

  11. Love this post Fleur, thank you so much!! I've been wanting to try a cleansing balm because I find that I need something to take off all of my foundation (when I wear it) before using my clarisonic.

Has anyone tried the Clinique balm? I saw Tanya rave about it in one of her videos and being a fan of the Clinique eye makeup remover I want to try the balm.

If you haven't already it would be amazing if you wrote a similar post about anti ageing products! :) I've just turned 21 and know I should start the war against wrinkles now, but I've read so much conflicting advise and don't know where to start?! x

  27. Hey Fleur, I have two quick questions. I noticed that you didn't include the Clinique Take Off The Day Cleansing Balm, any reason why? Also, I would love to know why you think mineral oil is bad? It's a distillation of a natural occurring product - petroleum. I mean, baby oil tends to be solely mineral oil + fragrance. I'm not sure that you should be classifying it as a "bad." Just something to think about.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't tried the Clinique one I'm afraid, which is why it wasn't included here. As for mineral oil... It's a HUGE debate, and I stand in the middle really. As I mentioned in the post (in the Eve Lom review) My skin personally doesn't react badly to mineral oil. (and when it's in a cleanser I don't really mind anyway, since you're washing it off) but it does apparently clog some people's pores. My personal problem with it being used in expensive skincare is the fact that it is a cheap product that is not necessarily beneficial to your skin. Like in the case of the Eve Lom cleanser, they could have used an alternative base that was much more beneficial for the skin (for £55 at least!!!)

    Replies
    1. I've never tried the Emma Hardie cleansing balm, but I do have the Ren, and it is a standby product. It's kind of basic, but the texture is really nice - smooth, no exfoliating particles, and rich enough to hydrate the skin and get a good massage going, but not rich enough to cause acne. I like it a lot. I can't comment on the new version, though, as I have the No. 1 Purity Cleansing Balm. I was purchasing it for my sister and I found one of the old version in Sephora, so I think that you can still get your hands on it from some retailers who have leftover stock. I'd recommend it (and so would my sister!) :)

  95. Thank you for this comparison. I'm going to try the Monu Cleansing Balm and my Emma Hardie is already on the way. I also plan on trying Clinique's Take The Day Off. Have you ever tried Clarins Extra Comfort Cleansing Cream? I personally love Eve Lom, despite the mineral oil. I only use it a couple of nights a week though. I have long preferred creamy type cleansers. Soaps and foaming cleaners have always dried my skin out.

  96. Great post, Fleur! I've only tried The Body Shop's Camomile as I find my sensitive, eczema-prone skin reacts less to the synthetic ingredients than natural ones. It bugs me that so many are floral as I'm allergic to most floral extracts, Camomile aside! x

  100. I use a gel cleanser by Vichy Normaderm and really like it :) however, once I start making a bit more money, I feel like trying the EH cleansing balm since every skin freak seems to like it :) plus, I really trust your opinion over anyone else's, Fleur!

  101. Such a great post, Fleur! I just started getting into cleansing balms with the Clinique Take the Day Off balm and this overview and comparison is so helpful because you're right, it's so easy to get lost in that field, there are just so many products and you're easily swept away.
I think I'm going to try the Emma Hardie and the Monu one as well, they sound really lovely!

  108. I just want to say thank you Fleur for giving us such a helpful review, I have felt so lost in the cleansing balm world. I follow blog after blog that talk about trying cleansing balms and how great they are, but they don't include a list like yours that give a review of everything. I think you did a great job giving an honest review about each product and gave us options that were in different price ranges. So thank you for clearing up the whole cleansing balm idea! I would love to see more reviews on cleansing balms and skincare in general

  111. My first cleansing balm was the Emma Hardie one. I loved using it. It feels great on the skin and removes makeup perfectly ...... But it broke me out so bad! I have never broken out from a product before (I am 39). It is such a lovely product and I hate that I can't use it. After some time I tried the one from the Body Shop. It didn't break me out just as bad but me skin did not agree with it. I have heard so many great reviews on cleansing balms - especially the Emma Hardie cleanser and was completely unprepared for it to break me out. Has that happened to anyone else?

  112. Really useful post, thanks! I've only tried the Ren one so far, it's alright but it leaves my skin feeling a little oily and massively stings my eyes! My sister LOVES the emma hardie one but I just haven't been able to bring myself to buy it while I have others to use up..you may have just convinced me that it's necessary ;)

  113. this post frustrates me SO MUCH. the EH cleansing balm is FULL of irritating scents and the price is RIDICULOUS for what you get.
i can't take these blogger-hypes any more... seems like very few of you know anything about skincare AT ALL, all you do is repeat after one another and wanna-be-gurus like caroline hirons. gaaahhhh.

It's amazing, I wear contacts and I have less problems with this one than with any normal make up remover and it really made a difference for my skin... just love it!

  120. This I MUST try, I have to be honest I swear by BIODERMA and what that has done to my skin, I'm now used to not having to splatter water all over as u do with the usual cleansers, this sounds like a nice addition, how is it different to bioderma If you have tried that?

  144. Fleur have you heard of the Clinique take the day off makeup removing balm? its the only one ive ever tried and im curious to see how it measures up to other more popular and proper cleansing balms. it does a great job of breaking down makeup and leaving skin moisurized, but it's not quite as amazing at taking off waterproof mascara (which is what i tend to wear everyday to keep my straight lashes curled.)

    ReplyDelete
  145. Actually the RMK cleansing balm is the most expensive - compared to the rest - as this is only 50g, while most of the others are over 100g. The Eve Lom balm is for 100g and at £55, so for 50g in this it would be around £27.
