24 Hours in Berlin

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be invited along to the launch of Braun's 'Breakfree' campaign with their new Global Beauty Ambassador, Jessica Alba in Berlin. I'd never been to Berlin before, so was super excited to see the city for the first time and honoured to be asked to attend alongside some of the world's leading beauty journalists.
The event saw Jessica announce her involvement with Braun and support of the Breakfree campaign, which aims to improve women's self-belief, confidence and self-esteem by encouraging other women to share positive messages via social media...

The campaign was particularly appealing to me because, working in social media, I see first hand how negative a space it can be at times. There's no denying the internet is an incredible platform for creativity and expressing yourself, but there is also a lot of negativity floating around and it's great to see an A List star collaborate with a huge global beauty brand to shine a light on this downside, and make the effort to make a change.

Whether it's making a concerted effort to compliment the women in your life in person, or tweeting a supportive message to someone who inspires you at a time when they are feeling low and insecure, the Breakfree movement is all about encouraging women to support and strengthen each other to feel confident in their day-to-day life. An undeniably positive message.

I also got the chance to have a quick chat to Jessica in person about her experience on social media (the good and the bad) She is breathtakingly beautiful in real life. If you think it's the magic of cinema making her look that good... it's not. She has incredible skin, beautiful hair and a fabulous figure to boot, but what was really refreshing about meeting her was the fact that she is actually really nice, and resoundingly 'normal'.

She spoke about her concerns being perceived as stupid, and not being taken seriously due to her perception as a sex symbol in her twenties, and how setting up her lifestyle company, The Honest Company, has helped her to combat these stereotypes.

She admitted that while she does get negative comments on her social platforms (she is surprisingly open on Twitter and Instagram, showing charming snippets of her family life) she finds it easy to ignore the negativity, and lets the positive sentiments shine through.

She comes across as being very humble. She values her family and credibility as an actress highly, but doesn't place too much value on perfecting her appearance, saying it 'could all be taken away in a split second, so it's what's on the inside that counts'. A very positive message.

I didn't get the chance to really explore Berlin, as we were only there for 24 hours, but what I did see was beautiful, and I'd definitely love to go back in the future!

Get involved with Braun's Breakfree campaign by tweeting someone a positive message using #breakfree on Twitter or Instagram. You can also follow them on Instagram for updates on the Breakfree Campaign.

  13. Hi Fleur, it is a great post. The Braun breakfree campaign sends a really cool message and I also really like Jessica Alba. She has an amazing approach of natural beauty and each time I read something about her it seems really down to hearth. I once read in an interview she organises some clothes exchange with friends. It was really positively surprising coming from a super star like her. Xoxo Alexandra

  18. Hopefully you get a chance to explore Berlin more in the future! Love what the campaign stands for. And so nice you got to mee Jessica Alba! I loved her ever since I saw the Disney original movie P.U.N.K.S. and fell absolutely in love with her as an actress in the TV series Dark Angel. I love that she is humble and down to earth too and of course, she is an absolutely beautiful person!

Id would be great if you could do a meetup in Germany one day or one in London at a weekend which you announce well in advance so that viewers from Germany get the chance to travel there and maybe combine going to the meetup with a nice weekend in London! I was so excited when I saw that you came to Germany AND that you met Jessica, I think she is so beautiful and inspiring, I love her book! Thanks for sharing photos and impressions of your day in my home country! =) Greetings from Cologne (another beautiful German city :P :) )

  48. I love this post and what a fantastic campaign to be affiliated with. I'm part of a group of plus size bloggers who are trying to promote a positive body image with the Love EVERY Body campaign which was the brain child of Leah at Just me Leah, her idea is that no matter what size you are we need to learn to love our bodies and because of this campaign and other positive messages from other bloggers I've began to be less negative about my body image and also stopped being so negative and passing judgement on others. This is something a lot of people need to do if you see a picture of someone compliment them on the outfit they are wearing or if you don't like the picture or the outfit be nice about it don't bash the person for how the look #breakfree from the negativity the trolling and be nice.

  58. Such a wonderful campaign to be a part of! Meeting Jessica Alba would have been so absolutely awesome too! It's funny I always assumed she was a down-to-Earth kinda gal but obviously have never met her or anything and I'm not the type to follow celebs in magazines or social media. #breakfree is tag that has absolutely taken over my instagram most especially and it makes me so happy to see so many people getting involved.
Hope you had an amazing time in Berlin too! Lucky lucky :)

  69. What a shame that you haven`t had more time there - you can get cool beauty brands in germany that you can`t buy in the uk. And you can buy bioderma at any pharmacy there as well.
    You definitely should come back.
    Nice post though.
